OpenCapture — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-05-17
OpenCapture is a screen-capture browser extension that runs entirely on your device. It is designed so that your captures never leave your computer.
What we collect
Nothing. OpenCapture does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any data.
- No personal information is requested or stored.
- No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or usage tracking of any kind.
- No accounts, no sign-in, no cloud.
Network activity
OpenCapture makes no outbound network requests. The extension contains no remote code and no third-party scripts. It functions fully offline. Screenshots and recordings are created, edited, and saved locally and are never uploaded anywhere.
What is stored on your device
- Captured images and recordings exist only in your browser's local session memory (and temporary on-device storage for in-progress video recordings) until you save them. Saved files go to your browser's normal Downloads folder, under your control. Nothing is retained by the extension after a capture is saved or discarded.
- One preference: whether the "Include microphone" toggle is on. This is a single on/off value stored in the browser's local extension storage so the toggle remembers your choice. It contains no capture content and no personal data.
Permissions and why they are needed
| Permission | Why OpenCapture needs it |
|---|---|
| activeTab | Read the current tab only when you trigger a capture, to take the screenshot. |
| scripting | Inject the selection overlay and full-page scroll logic into the page you are capturing. |
| desktopCapture | Show Chrome's native picker for desktop screenshot and video recording. |
| offscreen | Run the video recorder, which cannot run in a background service worker. |
| downloads | Save your screenshots and recordings to your Downloads folder. |
| storage | Remember the single "Include microphone" preference. |
| clipboardWrite | Copy an annotated screenshot to your clipboard when you click Copy. |
| notifications | Show a confirmation when a video recording is saved. |
None of these permissions are used to collect or transmit data.
Third parties
There are no third parties. OpenCapture integrates with no external services, SDKs, ad networks, or trackers.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be published in the extension's listing and source repository with a new "Last updated" date.
